23 photos of Black Down, West Dorset

Black Down is a hill in South Dorset which is an open access nature reserve. There are a number of trails around the hill and fine views from the summit. At the summit there is the Hardy Monument which was built in 1844 in memory of Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy who was captain of HMS Victory at the battle of Trafalgar. Black Down is a few miles north of the village of Portesham which is about 8 miles from Weymouth on the B3157. On the B3157 at Portesham turn right (where signposted to Hardys Monument) into the village. Follow this road through the village and then onto countryside. At a crossroads (Portesham Hill Cross) turn right and follow this road onto Black Down. There are several free car parks including a large car park by Hardys Monument.
