24 photos of the West Okement Valley, Dartmoor

The West Okement river flows down from Dartmoor into Meldon Reservoir and then down to Okehampton where it joins with the East Okement river and winds north to meet the River Torridge in North Devon. Above Meldon Reservoir, the river winds along a steep and picturesque valley. In the valley, there is a path along the north bank of the river, which includes a short distance through the Black-a-Tor copse, an oak woodland which is a National Nature Reserve. The easiest route to the West Okement Valley is from the Meldon Reservoir. Meldon Reservoir is near Okehampton on the A30. There is a turning on the A30 signposted to Meldon Reservoir. From the A30 turning, follow the directions to Meldon village and drive through the village. Just after the railway bridge, turn left where signposted to Reservoir Car Park. From the car park there is a short walk down a lane to the dam. The dam can be walked across to reach the east bank of the reservoir and there is a path along the east bank of the reservoir which leads into the West Okement Valley. Note that the path up the West Okement Valley is boggy in places.
